VeriSign to sell off mobile units

Network infrastructure developer VeriSign Inc. reportedly plans to divest a series of business units, possibly including its mobile messaging and content delivery divisions, to focus its business on securing online transactions as well as overseeing the ".com" and ".net" domain name registries. VeriSign is expected to announce its plans during a Wednesday meeting with analysts. In an interview with the Associated Press, CEO Bill Roper said the firm plans to sell businesses where it's not the clear market leader and focus on areas where it enjoys dominance. According to Roper, VeriSign will sell its mobile transactions infrastructure unit and its telecommunications routing business, although he added the company has not selected all of the divisions it will shed, nor has it settled on their respective price tags. "We're getting a lot of interest," Roper told the AP. "It's not a matter of these being cats and dogs that nobody's interested in. It's just a matter of … we might not be the best home for those businesses." Roper did not specifically address VeriSign's stake in mobile content firm Jamba, which it owns in conjunction with News Corp.

Indian government approves the introduction of mobile number portability (MNP) from 2008

The Indian government has approved the introduction of mobile number portability (MNP) from 2008, which gives cellphone users the freedom to choose their service provider while retaining their numbers.

Govt will introduce number portability in the four metros — Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. In the next phase, it will be extended to more parts of the country.

Market surveys have shown that up to 50% of all mobile users in India are unhappy with their operator, and are willing to switch to another service provider if allowed to retain their number. Number portability has so far been introduced in Australia, Korea, Japan, Canada, the US, the UK, most of Europe and Pakistan, among other countries.

So, the Google Phone, Gphone, GP or whatever you want to call it, at least we now know what kind of an OS it’s going to have. But what about the device itself? What is that going to be like? That’s the million-dollar question isn’t it? But here’s what we’ve heard so far through the grapevine. There are apparently five prototypes designed to house the Android OS for Google. As we heard, the models were going to be called the ‘Dream’ phones that were going to be developed by HTC. According to Peter Chou, HTC’s CEO, they plan to launch a commercial version of the phone sometime in the second quarter of next year.

Rumor has it that one of the designs could be the HTC Omni as a few of the specs that were revealed do seem to fit the bill. According to those specs the Gphone would have a 3x5 inch long display, probably a swivel or slide out QWERTY keyboard. It would also have a rather unique touch sensitive screen. According to Unwired view, the screen would actually have a time-sensitive touch screen wherein, depending on how long you keep a portion pressed it would expand. These specs already seem to be part of the Omni’s make up. Of course nothing is conclusive, so once again it’s mere speculation. I guess we’ll have to wait and watch.

Google to unveil gPhone within next few weeks

Google is reportedly poised to officially unveil its so-called gPhone mobile initiative. According to the Wall Street Journal, within the next two weeks Google will formally announce advanced software and services enabling handset makers to begin producing Google-powered devices as soon as mid-2008--the Journal reports the search giant has already approached manufacturers HTC and LG Electronics, while potential operator partners include T-Mobile USA, Orange SA and 3 U.K. The gPhone's open software platform is expected to emphasize applications including maps, social networking and video sharing: "The most likely scenario from a Google perspective is to build some, if you will, inspirational platform [applications], but primarily focus on getting third parties to do it because that's where the innovation will come from," Google CEO Eric Schmidt said during an appearance at the All Things Digital conference in May.

How Cell Phones Work?

Cell phones are essentially "radios." They communicate to the world by transmitting and receiving voice through cell towers setup throughout the area. And a carrier's coverage is a network of cell sites, each with a tower and base station controller for a range of about 10 square miles.

From a carrier's standpoint, great coverage comes at various technological expenses and certain restrictions that are out of their control. For instance, each provider is limited by the FCC to a number of frequencies it can use in any given city.

Given a limited number of frequencies available in the spectrum, in order to sustain the capacity needed for urban coverage, frequency reuse is required.

To put it into an extreme example, if there was only one tower covering all of New York City, only a limited amount of simultaneous users could use that tower at once due to FCC regulations, say 100 frequency slots. Thus, 100 users at once could use it.

Conversely, if each house had its own tower, 100 users would be able to talk on their cell phones simultaneously in each house. Since each tower now only has a few feet to cover, power consumption is greatly lowered. Once a guest walks to a neighbor's apartment, the current tower would hand off the user to the next tower, freeing up a spot of another person.

A talking SMS enables the user to record his or her voice and send it across like a simple text message, and the user can retrieve it at his leisure. Sending a voice SMS is as simple as sending a text message. The only difference is that instead of keying in the text, the subscriber would have to record his message and forward it.

The service is similar to a voice mail and can be retrieved by dialing a designated number. But unlike a voice mail, the message would be short (of around 20-30 seconds) and is treated as an SMS. This means it is not metered, like a voice call or mail. The service is expected to be a hit, as the charges are on par with that of an SMS.

The operator would install the technology and equipment for the service at his end, resulting in no additional cost to the user.

Google Developing Search for Mobile Content?

According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Google is working on a search engine designed to help users find mobile content such as ringtones, games, wallpapers and other paid content.

The WSJ said Google's new service would provide mobile phone users with a list of companies that provide a desired item, and Google would make money by charging companies for high placement on the list. The report said Google has been working on the project for months with unspecified content providers, but has run into some technical delays.

The Internet company is also considering the inclusion of a social-networking component that would let users of the company's Gmail email service exchange content. Overall, the service would work much like the Google Product Search service, formerly known as Froogle.

WSJ further reported, "Google's plans to broker the sale of mobile content like ringtones and games could become a threat to large cellphone operators like Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc., especially if Google enables customer payment through eBay Inc.'s PayPal or its own online Checkout service. The operators have built their own storefronts to sell such material, and they would prefer to hold on to consumers' attention and spending. If billing goes through the carriers instead, appearing on customers' monthly bills, carriers could actually benefit because they usually get a significant cut of such transactions

An enhanced transmission service that enables graphics, video clips and sound files to be transmitted via cellphones. Developed as part of the 3GPP project, MMS phones are generally backward compatible with SMS and EMS.

Methods of delivery
There are two modes of delivery in MMS: immediate or deferred:

Immediate delivery: When the MMS client on the mobile phone receives the MMS notification, it then immediately (without user intervention or knowledge) retrieves the MMS message from the Multimedia Messaging Service Center (MMSC) that sent the notification. After retrieval, the subscriber is alerted to the presence of a newly arrived MMS message.

Deferred delivery: The MMS client alerts the subscriber that an MMS message is available, and allows the subscriber to choose if and when to retrieve the MMS message.
As with the MMS submission, the MMS retrieval request, whether immediate or deferred, occurs with an HTTP request. The MMSC responds by transmitting the MMS message in an HTTP response to the MMS client, after which the subscriber is finally alerted that the MMS message is available.

The essential difference between immediate and deferred delivery is that the former hides the network latencies from the subscriber, while the latter does not. Immediate or deferred delivery are handset dependent modes, which means that the handset manufacturer can provide the handset in one mode or the other or let the user decide his/her preference

Operation
When a user sends a text message (SMS message) to another user, the message gets stored in the SMSC which delivers it to the destination user when they are available. This is a store and forward operation. The SMSC usually has a configurable time limit for how long it will store the message, and users can usually specify a shorter time limit if they want.

A message may also come from an application, for example voice mail server sending voice mail incoming message alerts. WAP Push messages are SMS messages that alert the user, and allow the user to open the URL sent.

WAP Push, has been incorporated into the specification to allow WAP content to be pushed to the mobile handset with minimum user intervention. A WAP Push is basically a specially encoded message which includes a link to a WAP address. WAP Push is specified on top of WDP; as such, it can be delivered over any WDP-supported bearer, such as GPRS or SMS.

In most GSM networks, however, GPRS activation from the network is not generally supported, so WAP Push messages have to be delivered on top of the SMS bearer. On receiving a WAP Push, a WAP 1.2 or later enabled handset will automatically give the user the option to access the WAP content.

They are of crucial importance in mobile distribution. They allow users to supply their phone number and be sent a link to a WML page, XHTML page, a J2ME application, or on higher end handsets they allow the user to download a fully featured application.

There are two types of WAP push message: Service Indication (SI) and Service Load (SL). Moblog is a blend of the words mobile and weblog. A mobile weblog, or Moblog, consists of content posted to the Internet from a mobile or portable device, such as a cellular phone or PDA. Moblogs generally involve technology which allows publishing from a mobile device.

BSNL is offering NDTV, CNBC, Aaj Tak, Times Now, Zoom, Bindass, ETC, TV9 etc, and intends to increase its content portfolio to cover 32 TV channels by 2007 end.
